The <strong>Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA)<\/strong> at <strong>Leiden University<\/strong> is offering <strong>three full-time PhD positions<\/strong> as part of the <strong>ERC-funded project \u201cTURNING VIOLENT\u201d<\/strong>, focusing on violence between civilians and between police and civilians in urban centres like <strong>Berlin, Paris, and London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udd2c Project Overview: TURNING VIOLENT<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This research project aims to identify the <strong>turning points that lead to one-sided violence<\/strong> in interpersonal conflicts. It will use <strong>publicly available video data<\/strong>, <strong>video elicitation interviews<\/strong>, and <strong>qualitative multimodal analysis<\/strong> to better understand violent dynamics. The research is grounded in <strong>ethnomethodology, conversation analysis<\/strong>, and will contribute to <strong>evidence-based violence prevention<\/strong> policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udccc Role and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a PhD candidate, you will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build and analyse a high-quality dataset using <strong>video-based ethnographic methods<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct <strong>interviews and video elicitations<\/strong> with violence experts, including police trainers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present at conferences and publish in academic journals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute to the <strong>Violence &amp; Violence Prevention Group<\/strong> and teach in related minors and master\u2019s tracks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udfaf Who Should Apply?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This opportunity is perfect if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hold a <strong>Master\u2019s degree<\/strong> in fields like <strong>Criminology, Sociology, Communication Studies, Psychology<\/strong>, or related disciplines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are proficient in <strong>qualitative research<\/strong> and tools like <strong>ELAN, NVivo<\/strong>, or similar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a strong command of <strong>English<\/strong>, and for those focusing on <strong>Berlin or Paris<\/strong>, also <strong>German or French<\/strong> (mandatory).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are willing to engage with both <strong>academic and field-based work<\/strong>, including travel within Europe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udccd Location &amp; Environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Based in <strong>The Hague<\/strong>, the <strong>Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA)<\/strong> at Leiden University offers a rich, interdisciplinary space.
