The Revista Mediterránea de Comunicación is inviting scholars and researchers to contribute to a special issue focused on sexist and misogynist discourses in media and digital platforms. Coordinated by leading academics from Spain and Italy, this issue aims to consolidate critical research on how misogynistic narratives spread, evolve, and impact both individuals and society.

Understanding the Problem: Misogyny in Digital Media

Hate speech in digital spaces is more than just harmful language—it perpetuates stereotypes, damages social relations, and strengthens extremist ideologies. Despite efforts by policymakers and media platforms, misogynistic narratives continue to thrive, particularly within the growing “Manosphere.”

This fragmented ecosystem includes communities such as:

  • Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs)
  • Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW)
  • Pick-Up Artists (PUAs)
  • Incels

Research shows that these groups increasingly attract younger audiences, often merging with far-right anti-feminist communities. Such echo chambers create feedback loops, making misogyny a real-world threat with lasting consequences.
