CFP: Special Issue on Cultural Studies in Media and Communication in Iberia – Catalan Journal of Communication & Cultural Studies

About the Special Issue

The Catalan Journal of Communication & Cultural Studies is inviting submissions for its upcoming Special Issue (18.2) titled “Cultural Studies in Media and Communication in Iberia: (Un)Defining the Field.” This edition marks the first MCS-focused issue dedicated to exploring the development and diversification of Cultural Studies within the Iberian Peninsula.

With a growing academic focus on how media, communication, and cultural practices reflect power structures, social hierarchies, and creative agency, this special issue aims to bring fragmented research in Iberia into a unified conversation. Scholars are encouraged to contribute theoretical or empirical articles that push boundaries and challenge traditional academic canons.

Why This Issue Matters

Cultural Studies emerged post-WWII as a field concerned with power, ideology, and inequality in everyday life. While originally rooted in the UK, its reach has expanded into various regional contexts—including Iberia, where Media and Communication Studies (MCS) departments have become central to its evolution.

The current media landscape in Iberia, shaped by figures like Rosalía, Belén Esteban, María Pombo, and Ibai Llanos, provides rich material for critical cultural inquiry. These public figures and the digital practices surrounding them offer insight into how gender, race, ethnicity, class, and taste intersect in popular culture.

This special issue seeks to reevaluate how topics previously dismissed as trivial can in fact offer profound insights into contemporary society, particularly amid ongoing ideological struggles, social inequalities, and digital transformations.
