About the Portulans Democracy Project (PDP)
The Portulans Institute is currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to its Portulans Democracy Project (PDP). This forward-looking initiative is dedicated to identifying, analyzing, and supporting democratic innovations worldwide. The role is especially well-suited for scholars passionate about democratic processes, digital transformation, and mixed-methods research.
Role Overview
- Location: Oxford (UK), Washington D.C. (USA), or remote
- Commitment: Full-time preferred, part-time considered
- Duration: 9–12 months, starting in September 2025
- Compensation: Negotiable based on experience and availability
This flexible role offers the unique opportunity to engage in policy-relevant research while contributing to global conversations on democratic governance and innovation.
Who Should Apply?
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in political science, policy studies, Internet or communication studies, or related disciplines. Ideal candidates will bring:
- A demonstrated academic or practical background in democratic processes, governance reform, civic participation, or institutional design
- A strong understanding of digital technologies, including social media, civic tech tools, and the use of AI in civic contexts
- Experience conducting case studies, mixed-methods research, and cross-national comparative analysis
- An ability to distill complex findings into impactful insights for both academic and policy audiences
- A proven record of research publications or written outputs, with preference for single-authored work
