The University of Groningen, one of Europe’s leading research universities, is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position at the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies within the Faculty of Arts. This exciting opportunity is part of the project “Tracing Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Digital Journalism, 1995–2025.”

About the Project

Digital technologies have significantly shaped debates around the future of journalism. While often presented as solutions to journalism’s challenges, they have also constrained its possible directions and sidelined critical discussions about the complex relationship between journalism and technology.

This PhD project will critically examine how sociotechnical imaginaries—visions of the future shaped by technology and society—have influenced journalism from the introduction of the web to current debates around artificial intelligence (AI).

Key questions include:

  • How have journalists, technologists, and other actors negotiated and normalized new technologies?
  • What competing values and norms have guided the evolution of journalism in the digital age?
  • In what ways has technology been positioned as a necessary and self-evident driver of journalistic change?

The research aims to provide a critical history of journalism’s recent past within the Northern European context.
