Artist in Residence Opportunity: Engage in Interdisciplinary Research with SOUNDSCALE Project (UKRI Funded)
The University of Southampton invites applications for an exciting part-time position as an Artist in Residence within the groundbreaking UKRI-funded project SOUNDSCALE: Sensing On Urban Noise: Distributed Sensing for Collaborative and Sustainable Cityscapes and Living Environments.
This opportunity is hosted by the Department of Art & Media Technology at Winchester School of Art, in collaboration with the Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics research group. The selected artist will engage in interdisciplinary research exploring Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology through creative and critical lenses.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent artistic research in relation to DAS technology and urban noise.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team including researchers in art, humanities, social sciences, and environmental studies.
- Participate in research activities, contribute to methodology development, and co-create research outcomes.
- Engage with communities in Southampton and London to ensure socially relevant and inclusive practices.
- Contribute to project outcomes such as artworks, toolkits, papers, and policy resources.
- Benefit from production funding, travel support, and mentorship opportunities.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated experience in artistic practice, especially within community engagement and interdisciplinary research.
- Strong interest in critical approaches to technology, infrastructure, sound art, algorithmic culture, or environmental studies.
- No PhD required; portfolio and CV submission are essential.
- Encouraged applicants include those from diverse backgrounds, especially women, Black, Asian, minority ethnic and disabled artists.
Role and Benefits
- Position: Artist in Residence (titles may vary based on qualifications)
- Duration: Part-time (21 hours/week)
- Salary: Approx. £21,678 – £24,298 per annum (pro-rata from £36,130 – £40,497)
- Location: University of Southampton, with community engagement in London and Southampton
