Special Issue – Journal of Language and Social Psychology
Theme- “How Does Artificial Intelligence Change Communication?”
The Journal of Language and Social Psychology is inviting submissions for a groundbreaking special issue titled “How Does Artificial Intelligence Change Communication?” Edited by Dr. Andrea L. Guzman (Northern Illinois University), Dr. Bingjie Liu (Ohio State University), and Dr. Renwen Zhang (National University of Singapore), this issue seeks to explore how AI is transforming the study and practice of communication from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.
About the Special Issue
This special issue aims to interrogate the evolving role of artificial intelligence in reshaping communication practices, frameworks, and psychological understanding. It welcomes contributions from communication, psychology, sociology, linguistics, education, information science, and other allied disciplines.
With AI systems like natural language processing tools, generative AI, machine learning, and conversational agents (e.g., chatbots, virtual companions), the boundaries of traditional human communication are rapidly shifting. The editors seek papers that reflect on how AI alters our understanding of message exchange, social interaction, meaning-making, and communication theory itself.
Focus and Scope
This issue encourages thought-provoking research that expands or redefines existing frameworks in light of AI technologies. The scope covers a wide range of topics, including conceptual, theoretical, and empirical studies involving:
- Narrow AI, machine learning, and generative AI
- AI-based communication tools (e.g., Grammarly, chatbots, smart replies)
- Human-machine communication and AI-mediated interactions
- AI algorithms in content curation, moderation, and message distribution
- The social psychology of language in AI-influenced environments
- AI’s influence on intercultural, interpersonal, mass, political, and organizational communication
The editors are particularly interested in interdisciplinary perspectives that question, extend, or even challenge established communication theories by placing AI at the center of inquiry.
Suggested Research Questions
Researchers are encouraged to explore questions such as:
- How does AI change or redefine the fundamental nature of communication?
- In what ways does AI influence psychological processes and communication outcomes?
- How does AI shape communication dynamics between humans and machines?
- What are the implications of AI for message credibility, diversity, and inclusion?
- How can traditional communication theories adapt to AI-driven environments?
- What makes AI distinct as a communicator or mediator?
- How might AI offer fresh insights into older communication models?
- Can AI-driven communication bring about a paradigm shift in social psychology?
